What is ear canal inflammation, external otitis?

Inflammation of the ear canal, external otitis, is an inflammation/infection of the external auditory canal. This is different from the common type of ear infection that you frequently suffer in connection with colds. Both children and adults can suffer from ear canal inflammation.

Common causes

The problem often arises during the summer or on holiday when we swim and bathe a lot. External otitis is therefore often referred to as swimmer’s ear. High humidity and water disturb the ear's natural acidic environment and the production of earwax with its protective properties. The skin in the ear then becomes irritated and is easily infected by bacteria and fungi. Showering with soap and shampoo, poking inside the ear, excessive cleaning, eczema and the use of hearing aids, head-sets and ear-plugs can also cause ear canal inflammation.

Symptoms

Itching and pain in the ears are among the most common symptoms. But you may also experience blocked ears and swollen ear canals, with possible hearing loss as a result. If you experience severe pain, prolonged or recurring symptoms, it is recommended to consult a doctor.
